BECAUSE IT'S IN THE GUIDE BOOK
This shot is from the Louvre Museum, in front of De-Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”. One of the most visited pieces of art of all times. Millions of people come to see this painting. Hundreds, thousands each day… but do they REALLY come to appreciate it or even to “see” it?
This guy is taking a selfie in front of the painting, he just arrived and the next moment he will be gone. He could not really enjoy the painting and in fact nobody can, because you can’t approach it – for security reasons you must stand at least 3 meters from it – and there are so many people, so much noise, that the most basic contemplation is quite impossible.
Is it worth the time you stand in the queue to enter the Louvre (On some holidays it can take around 2 hours)? It seems so… but maybe not for the reason we believe. An American journalist met many tourists in Paris, in places like the Louvre, Note-Dame, the Eiffel tower and Montmartre – traditional places to visit- and asked them why they came to visit these particular places. The most common answer was: “because it’s in the guide book”.
So believe it or not… It’s in the guide, and the meaning is that it is a “must see”. That people cannot afford to travel to Paris and not to follow the guide, and of course they need a proof: a selfie.
It does not matter where, it does not matter what… it matters that we were where the guide says we should be.
Would there be a time when we stop acting like sheep?
