Overlay – or layer – is a term often used in digital photography. Many soft wares allow adding layers to a photograph, adding elements and modifying the entire image.
In this photograph something was painted in white on the window. A sort of tree on the left and people on the right. I don’t know what was the original meaning of it, but the tree on the left seems to appear like something the guy on the left was holding in his hand and the small people seems to be real people waiting for the next train on the opposite platform.
Sometimes the layer would fit so well, that it would be hard to distinguish it from reality, because it blends in and become an integral part.
It seems the same occurs with our subjectivity. Preconceptions and prejudices become our way of living and seeing the world and thus we begin to deviate from reality even without being conscious of it.
There is one mental quality which can prevent us from falling into this trap: Discernment. Sadly, not all of us are able to make use of Discernment in life, but if you can: protect and cherish it. It is a rare quality.
