I know there has been news coverage of the European Space Agency's achievement today, and even a Google doodle, but I wish there were more excitement about the Philae probe. People, from the surface of a roughly spherical object that is spinning at 1,000 miles an hour at its equator, we humans just chunked a spaceship on a TEN-YEAR TRAJECTORY at a wee hunk of ice and rock that is HURTLING through the solar system, managed to ORBIT IT, then further managed to hurl a washing machine-sized probe to SOFTLY LAND ON ITS CRAZILY SPINNING SURFACE! This was an INSANELY AMBITIOUS AND BRILLIANTLY EXECUTED HUMAN ENDEAVOR! There should be CHURCH BELLS AND SHIT! Everyone should just take a moment. Stop loading the dishwasher, or putting gas in your car, or scraping that weird bump off your foot and think about the kind of things we're capable of, and Hey! What if we put that awesome power to doing good work right here on Earth? LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO!
Humans, man. Wow!
