It seems to me that Facebook is now functionally BROKEN. Though I have no concrete evidence to support it, my explanation for it is this... to further fragment us by discouraging any sort of alternative-to-the-mainstream coalition building.
By feeding you the same 25 or so posts multiple times a day, any sustained form of threaded discussion is tactically handicapped... and random blather is allowed to fill the void... which pushes more critical arguments into the background, until in frustration those people stop posting anything that might kick up a row, because now the supporting voices that in the past might have backed you up, aren’t even seeing the post.
What separates this type of censorship from the more familiar sorts of the past, is that it’s now 100% algorithmic. So for example, in the past you could be critical of U.S. and Israeli militarism and yet be pretty sure that nobody outside the thread was going to pay too much attention to you, now there are specific algorithms to counter just that type of opinion, and some very aggressive ones at that.
So, while we are wringing our hands about friends, whose more controversial posts have been deleted, this even more Insidious strategy moves center stage, namely the systematic dumbing down of the entire platform, which will ultimately drive away anything but happy talk and click-bait consumer behaviors.
Methinks our time here for expressing free speech is looking short-lived.
