"Consciously trying to be as honest as possible"
I wrote that lyric a long time ago and it helped me figure out exactly why I want to make music. It's not about being "real" as much as it's about being genuine or transparent.
This song was one of the first I wrote after that realization that felt like I was beginning to scratch the surface of what I'm trying to accomplish. It's a rough look at who I am and it felt raw. It inspired the no frills headshot for the cover photo and set the theme for the more personal songs on Cheap Drinks, Poor Lighting. I knew that I wanted to do a video for it and that I needed it to be that same no bullshit glimpse into who I am. The intro sample is from a children's song vaguely about making yourself a novelty in order to gain affection from others. It felt right the moment I heard it.
Big thanks to Jordan Napolitano for executing a great video to pair with his cover photo and for giving me exactly what I asked for.
One day I'm going to make music so personal that it makes everyone in the room uncomfortable including myself.
