I haven’t been completely honest with you. Get used to it, honesty is too expensive. Things are already in motion and they have been for quite some time now.
So far, in roughly a year I went from a nobody to one of the most well-known characters in town. Some people admire me, some feel threatened, hell… there’s a group out there that hates me. Nothing says you are relevant like having people wasting their time hating you for no real reason. I also have a pretty good headquarters and credit with all the suppliers I may need. I've become a client/partner they go out of their way to please because they believe I'll turn them a good profit. We'll see in time how long that's going to last. All I need now is some political influence and I’ll have a foot in each of three main aspects of society: social, economic and political. But I don’t wanna play with that now, politics is too time-consuming.
How I got here is a long story and we may never have time for it, life is short, but who knows? What matters and what I actually meant with setting things in motion is that the resources I used to get here don’t suit me anymore and it is time to replace them. Oh, and by “resources” I mean five subjects: 1 strategist, 2 managers, 1 executioner and 1 stage prop. I could have done it without the prop though.
I read somewhere that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Well, I doubt that. But I’ll say this: you can’t control much more than five subjects at the same time. There simply isn’t enough time or mental space. So, if the five people you control aren’t giving you the results you need, don’t try getting more, just replace them.
Yesterday morning I was already down to three: the executioner, one manager, and the prop. The other two left for outside reasons (hey, no matter how good you are, you can't manipulate death and a couple more shit life throws at you). I still have a use for the executioner, so I have only two more to cut loose. I would love to create a tension here. But you don’t know these people so you won’t care what happens to them.
Look at you agreeing with me! And to think you were judging me as cold a couple paragraphs ago.
Well, maybe I could and I’m just not as good a writer as I think I am. Anyways, I’ll entertain you with how I did it instead. As many things in life, to an outsider, it may look like it was all done in a day. But I'll offer you an inside look.
For months I’ve been preparing “eject buttons” for each of my resources that I can press at any time to make them caput. How you that? You cultivate a sentiment, strong enough to make the subject take the desired action. Like filling a with a dropper until it's ready to overflow. At the same time, you give the subject something to manage that feeling. Otherwise, they may end up in a feedback loop and filling the cup by themselves. When you are ready to pull the trigger, just add a couple more drops and let it overflow.
If you do it right, they will actually feel good about it. The sensation that comes with the decision to take action is one of relief. After all, they are getting rid of the burden you've hidden in their lives all this time. They may even be grateful to you for making them realize it! But as any complex manipulation, there's a chance it will backfire. And couldn't have that impact on the social aspect I've built. So I got the executioner to do it for me using the same technique I used for the eject button but creating a sentiment in regard to his friends.
That probably sounded like a lot of work but it isn’t. Have you ever went from a place to another and after getting there noticed you paid no attention at all to the walk that led you there? I didn't have to think about it. From the moment I decided I should build those eject buttons, every drop was just like taking another step on a path I already knew.
Today I’m down to one resource: the executioner. Funny fact: he was the most resistant to the cult idea in the beginning and is now my most loyal follower. To get rid of the other two he set up a meeting, pressured all the right spots and got them to quite. He felt really good about it too, I'll always remember the two of us secretly cheering. Oh, how I am proud of my creation!
Now it's recruiting time again!
