So Ello Beta is definitely not there yet but it's interesting what incredible buzz has popped up in such a short period of time. The people are hungry for a new social experience and as a Social Media Manager I can understand why. Aside from how noisy it is here, the problem with Facebook is the boiling frog story. FB's myriad offenses, like forcing messenger or the new name policy, gradually shift the network into something that makes us all uncomfortable but we don't have enough outrage at any single point to actually leave. So we feel trapped and like we have no control over the virtual landscape in which we spend so much of our lives these days. With no viable alternative, there's no incentive for them to take criticism seriously. So will Ello grow up quickly enough to be that alternative? It certainly won't be G+, Twitter or anything currently out there. Maybe it will all splinter into niche networks for specific interests. Whatever happens next, we're all totally addicted to social networking so that's not going away but I think there's an incredible opportunity to provide a solid product and have it tip.
