realizing i had a new tv medium/message experience, that of being ACTIVELY and INTENTIONALLY and SIGNIFICANTLY DECEIVED, BY THE SOUNDTRACK. and i’m honestly kinda reeling.
don’t wanna be spoilery but this is probably a boring post if i don’t specify the show so i’ll put it in the comments i guess. i’m hoping there’s a broader theme to explore about soundtracks tho so i’ll open it up: what are some interesting ways music has surprised you or manipulated you?
something i’ve probably learned from horror/suspense is to assume the soundtrack will give me inside info the characters maybe don’t know, usually about danger. rarely is it the means by which i am meaningfully deceived right along with the characters.
to be fair, i think maybe music affects me in an outsized way because i’m often streaming on a second monitor while i play a game. i think this makes me extra vulnerable to sound cues and maybe slightly ignorant of the surrounding context. i rely on the music to tell me where to look and what to believe.
cause looking back, there were COPIOUS danger cues, in visuals and dialogue, over a period of multiple episodes, and i guess yeah it was pretty obvious, like fifty/fifty at least, that something was gonna happen. didn’t take it seriously.
