The story thus far:
Belfast, of Ransom's Crew, has just rescued someone from an assassin; and this is the first of their conversation:
The younger man said: 'You're Ransom, aren't you?'.
Belfast answered: 'Everybody's Ransom: everyone who installs photoelectric panels on its roof, or helps a beggar earn an honest living, or drives an electric, instead of an internal-combustion car; everyone who lives within its means, and makes everything count; every farmer who puts one drop of fertilizer or insecticide on every seed, instead of spraying or dusting; every shopper who buys from local farmers and craftsmen, instead of from the multinats; every diner who turns vegetarian; every householder who greets its neighbors with kindness, instead of fear; every news-writer who refuses to call crime by the name of 'terrorism'; every businessman who refuses to buy and sell anything made by slaves; every citizen who welcomes emigrants into its country, its neighborhood, or even its land; every police-officer who treats civilians as its clients, innocent until proven guilty; every worker who joins the trade-union, or the conservation club, or the civil-rights movement, and puts its life on the line in some public demonstration; every white man who protects people of other colors from supremacists and racists; every Englishman who wishes for the liberation of Ireland; every Chinese who calls for the restoration of Tibet; every Jew who makes friends among Muslims; every carpenter who refuses to work with old-growth wood; every jeweller, and buyer, who prefers synthetic gems; every surgeon who puts its patients on a footing of health, instead of medicating disease after disease, like a novice sailor changing tack; every veterinarian who treats animals of all sizes, from ferrets to whales; every physicist, chemist, or naturalist who applies its discoveries for the benefit of the public; every priest who comforts its worshippers with myth, instead of frightening them with damnation; every criminal who turns honest; every alumnus who offers higher education to just anybody with the mind and the will for it; everyone who abstains from the practices of the faithful, and follows the example and the teachings of the prophets, alone; every writer and artist, every composer and film-maker who shows people a world rather of hope and knowledge, than one of despair; every one of these, is Ransom. He is everywhere, and he is no where; he is everybody, and nobody. Everyone who advances our cause, is Ransom'.
