from Philosophy & College Life:
Seymour remarked, ‘If musk-oxen are closest related to goats, we should redraw the imagery of Thor in his chariot: instead of little farmyard billy-goats pulling a two-wheeler, we should illustrate Snarler and Grinder as two huge humpbacked behemoths pulling a flying-machine like the one in the Book of Ezekiel, in place of the “strange creatures” who seemed to be drawing that’.
Jessex asked: ‘What strange creatures?’.
Seymour answered: ‘Don’t you remember? Ezekiel says, in the story, he saw a cloud of fire and smoke, and in it were four strange creatures, each with four heads and four wings attached to an otherwise human body, standing wingtip to wingtip; and at the foot of each was the famous “wheel within a wheel”, like the skeleton of a globe, so they could go in any direction without turning. He goes on:
“When the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When they moved, the others moved; when they stopped, the others stopped; and when they rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels”.
So they must’ve been drawing the wheels, and those wheels turned out to be attached to the feet of a mobile throne, with the god seated on it. What I’m getting at is, Thor’s thunder-chariot and most other “chariots of the gods” must’ve been built on the same lines as that one’.
Said Jessex: ‘It makes sense. But what happened to Ezekiel after he saw that chariot?’.
Ismail answered: ‘The usual thing: he lay shocked out of his mind for a few days, then when he recovered he went around saying There is no one and nothing worthy of respect but the Creator to everyone he met, and a few believed him and most people didn’t, and those who didn’t tried to shut him up’.
