So this is the way the world is saved!
The theme these days seems to be always saying…’so this is the way the world ends!’
But to be honest I’m tired of all the negativity. We’ve gone from utopia to dystopia in a few short decades. Think of all the dystopian films and books out there. The alarming thing here is that the change in idiom probably echoes both the disintegrating state of the world and also people’s helplessness and hopelessness. Both very frightening but the negativity generated is not helpful in the long run.
We can blame many things for the frightening brink we currently stand on…human complacency, the alarming rate of unthinking change, the biased and damaging media, greedy multi-nationals, poor leadership, just plain greed or any number of things, but really it comes down to knowledge and will - to change the world.
People have power! In a capitalist democracy, they control what happens in two big ways – by voting and by spending.
Think about it…you’re in a clan millions of years ago, and your chosen leader makes a decision to camp everyone near a river known to flood severely. What do you do? Go along with it knowing it will lead to your probable death or challenge the leadership?
Think about it…you’re in a clan now and your chosen leader decides to wholeheartedly support fossil fuel burning thereby ensuring eventual planetary destruction and loss of life. What do you do? Go along with it knowing it will lead to your probable death or challenge the leadership?
Humans are clever. And humans are stupid. It’s a weird paradox. But I believe if we can stop thoughtlessly and gullibly following anything that is not beneficial for our survival then we can turn it all around. Here’s the catch. It’s all gotta change. All the present systems, values, goals and visions. But you can definitely move it along with how you vote and how you spend.
And that brings us back to knowledge and will. The knowledge to understand what to do and the will to change things for the better. At the moment, we’re ‘stuck in stupid.’ We are choosing, to fate our species, and many other species and maybe even the entire planet to extinction. But imagine if we didn’t.
Imagine we understood that our survival and the planets depends on adopting and following only natural systems. Imagine we knew we had to STOP all the chemical toxic products, all the fossil fuel burning, all the values that favour unlimited growth and greed, all the consumerism and wastage, all the monoculture and other non-natural systems. Oh, wait we do!!
So what we need right now is WILL. The will to start meaningfully changing lifestyles, forming co-operative clever groups and bypassing outdated systems and supposed leaders who are ‘stuck in stupid.’ And I don’t mean changing to organic food, reducing your plastic usage and voting green! By all means do this but don’t only do this. These little, though important, lifestyle choices by themselves, will not steer us from the serious consequences of a too hot too poisoned planet. Think and act big! Don’t buy into the status quo, look for ways to meaningfully change the current dialogue and systems to leave a world for our children to share with the rest of life on earth.
As Buckminster Fuller and Einstein pointed out:
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking
we used when we created them.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.
We can no longer afford nihilistic thinking and/or complacency. Let’s evolve as a species, not devolve. And along the way save the world.
