I'm Rel Pham, a Sydney based artist, whose practice swings back and forth between painting and illustration. Born under the glow of CRT monitors, raised in an internet cafe - my paintings incorporate bright vivid colours and cartoonish visages that lurk within crumbling effigies and ruins, exploring ideas of virtual vs. actual, technophilia vs. technophobia and what that might mean to us as users.
I found technology and internet culture as a gateway to explore my own heritage as somebody of Eurasian descent who did not necessarily find that around the people located near me. As well as it's introducing of the avant garde, sub/anti-cultures. The landscape has changed remarkably since then, and that is why I paint/draw things that look like a combining of ancient, opulent cultures and decaying, malevolent technology.
