The roots of sin lie primarily in the fear, defined as the anguish after imaginary or real damage that, at the same time, might be considered as something opposed to what is expected. As a result, anxiety shows up and then… the blame, either from an outside agent or from ourselves… all of this can be taken as a fault in front of a religious mirror or, in a social sense, as an act that places itself quite far from the right thing to do... 2016 has been a determinant year in social facts, given political, economic and cultural conditions which have brought and also motivated different types of behavior from Venezuelans and Latin-Americans, generally speaking. From poverty raising, hunger, violence and life quality decay … In a simple cause and effect relationship, this can be evidenced as follows:
Fear - Anxiety - Blame - Sin
Sin In this sense, this photographic proposal lays out the necessity to make voice about anything that would be considered to be right from individuals and its impact extended to social facts, discarding religious influence and focusing on self-punishment as a fact with complex dimensions which go beyond behavioral manifestations in society… what is the social scope of our daily performance? Would our malfunctioning depend on such grade of frequency of these behaviors?… María Laura Barrios´ photographic interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins in contemporary times within the framework of “Current Situation: a Country with Social Crisis” in given as follows:
Pride: The Beddler.
Greed: The Reggaetonero.
Lust: The Nymphomaniac.
Gluttony: The Hoarder.
An there´s more... ;) It counts on 73 photographs (Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride and Wrath: 4 images e/o. Envy: 5 images, all of them in printed format. Lust: 48 images shown by means of a video-art).
This sample has been fully exhibited at Centro de Creación Artística TET, in Caracas – Venezuela, October 18th - November 7th, counting good and receptive attendance. Then, it was presented at Teatro Alberto de Paz y Mateos foyer within the framework of its 50th anniversary, on November 18th to December 15th , 2017.
It is important to highlight the fact that this photographic work has been made from the self-portrait technique. However, for the scenic purpose, 16 recognized Venezuelan theater actors/actresses were involved in the representation of Lust (12 people) and Greed (3 people). María Laura shows herself in the photos as the principal character of each representation by acting out in order to express “I´m nobody to judge”. Additionally, it is important to mention that Lust had the chance to be performance directed by Carlos Fabián Medina and Alexander Malinosky, both theater directors who won the Young Directors Festival – Annual Event held by Trasnocho Cultural (www.trasnochocultural.com) in Caracas, Venezuela. Additionally, it was required to include 2 graphic designers and 1 filmaker to carry out technical and curatorial procedures.
