Social media is my passion and I love watching how experiencing that is shaping our lives. In October 2017, My wife and I started an online project. We scoured more than 5000 Public Instagram accounts and we chose the most creative, dramatic and authentetic photos. To me, Instagram is not just about selfies so it was exciting to see these people using it differently. They weren’t just sharing pretty pictures; they were baring their souls. They did not use social media to hide; instead, they found a way to use it to capture their pain, loneliness, and anger. They are not just consumers. They are the storytellers of our generation.
I was so inspired that I wanted to re-create them to share these beautiful, raw emotions with the world. I put together a small but great team in Los Angeles and started to re-shoot those photos with models. I didn’t aim to recreate them element-by-element; instead, I wove my vision into theirs to create new versions of their stories.
And that was how Project ReCognition was born. By recognizing people who had the courage to be their true selves on social media. Within a few days of launching the campaign, it went viral and news about the project was translated into many languages. As our story spread, we have began to receive photos from around the world.
