So my daughter just got a big (and needed) lecture from her mom about using online communication to dump all her problems on her friend, who is frankly a little fragile in the first place, especially when the problems are completely imaginary. (Inability to actually state a problem, including in her communication with her friend, suggests that to be the case.)
Anyway, this post isn't about that and it surely isn't a request for parenting advice -- my thinking is more at this moment about how I myself use social networking. Mostly, I try to avoid dumping. I don't always succeed. There is a notion called e/n in some of the online fora that stands for "everything/nothing" -- something that means everything to the poster but absolutely nothing to anyone else, i.e. usually highly personal stuff. I am definitely not immune to the siren song of e/n posting. Arguably, I'm doing it right now, although I have the notion there's a larger topic here.
And speaking of that topic: so what are these sites for, anyway? Is it, like my daughter just got told, unfair to make the life of others harder by dumping your own stuff on them? Should we stick to cat gifs? (Disclaimer: I love cat gifs.) Philosophical debate? Media advocacy? What's social networking for?
(Note: If you suspect I'm just making a long philosophical post because I haven't seen one on ello yet, you're probably right. Also, ello abruptly went offline while I was trying to post this -- good thing I'm paranoid and copied and pasted the content first. Then deleted it and reposted it because nobody could see it. Then again because the mobile site screwed it up...)
