“Emerald City Comic Con @ The Washington State Convention Center” by Richard F. Yates
This year, the ECCC was a FOUR DAY event in a gigantic venue, the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle, Washington. SIX FLOORS of special guests, comics creators, games, vendors, and citizens in wild costumes! Michael King (from Art Horse / Bonemill / H.E.X.) had an extra ticket for Saturday, and we made a valiant attempt seeing as much of the show as we could in one day. (I think we covered 2 and a half floors, real well. It would definitely have taken four days to see everything.)
We saw some legends in the comics industry as well as some of my personal heroes: Chris Claremont, Terry Moore, Jae Lee, Jamie Hernandez (!), Peter Bagge, and one of my favorite comic artists of all, MIKE ALLRED (!!!) Unfortunately, Mike Allred and Chris Claremont had long lines, so I didn’t get to speak to them, but I DID get to talk with Jamie Hernandez for a few minutes (one of the creators of the absolutely legendary independent title, LOVE & ROCKETS!) He was very kind, indulging my nerdy questions, and it was a real pleasure to meet him!
Naturally, I didn’t have much money to spend, but I did enjoy talking to the various creators. I particularly liked chatting with the “little folks,” who might or might not have big time publishers, but who create their own works with unique flavor and an individual spirit and vision. (I grabbed dozens of business cards and will try following as many as possible on the various social networks---and if I ever get some EXTRA cash, I’d like to get some books and/or artwork from every creator I spoke with!)
My other favorite part of a big show like this is seeing the cosplayers, who were out in force! There were hundreds of great costumes, but I only got a handful of photos. Here are just a few of them.
I’m not a huge fan of Seattle, which is big and full of people, but it was worth journeying into for an event like this one. Mike found some cool art prints for his family, and we both got a lot of “MARKET RESEARCH” done for a new SUPER-SECRET project that we’re working on. It was a great trip, and even though we didn’t see the entire show (we didn’t get anywhere near the floor where they were hiding David Tennant, Christopher Lloyd, Mark Sheppard, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Summer Glau, Phil LaMarr, or any of those folks), it was a full day. And HONESTLY, I don’t think I could be around THAT MANY people for more than a day.
I’d really like to thank Mike for the ticket and for driving! Maybe I’ll even try to make it for another day---next year… Maybe…
