False Mirror "Derelict World" CD
At the beginning I must say that I normally prefer more ambient than dark ambient genre, but I was immediately hooked after seeing stunning artwork of "Derelict World" in one advertisement. Yes, the artwork is phenomenal, executed by UK photographer Steve Payne, 20-page booklet with a short story by journalist Bjørn Springorum and detailed notes on each of 8 tracks. All this packaged in luxurious six-panel digipak.
And what about the music? Well, to say it straightly, it's as much amazing as the visuals, this sonic appocalypse left me immediately breathless!!! "Derelict World" is a true piece of art, both musically and visually, collector's dream. The mastermind of False Mirror, Tobias Hornberger, delivers on his 3rd full-length album absolutely exciting, intense, massive and immersive dark droning journey full of perfectly fitting and crystal clear sounding field recordings (creaking wooden floor or locker, old clockwork, various water sounds, some of them taken on the shores of my beloved Danube river...) and spiced by some occasional sounds of bells, chimes, gongs, flutes or custom-made metal didgeridoo. Every sound and every detail done on this album has its own purpose, everything is carefully and skillfully crafted and placed. Even if I am talking here about some ghostly and stormy appocalypse, this work is not as dark and other-worldly sounding as someone might expect from Malignant gang. Maybe I could mention here some ambient/dark ambient masters as comparison or influence, but it's not necessary, because Tobias is doing it his own way with all his perfectionism and he is heading to become one of them!!! And by the way, there are hidden on the album even some secret messages that will lead you to some bonus...
If someone asks me why I always keep on prefering physical CDs over download only releases, "Derelict World" is the best answer!!! Great work from Tobias and all others involved in this 74 minute long thundering journey. Now it's time to solve the quest...
