Hollan Holmes "A Distant Light" CD
What caught my attention first, was the stunning cover artwork and having Steve Roach for the mastering wizardry. With "A Distant Light" CD as a debut release, the name Hollan Holmes is brand new to me even if he has already done some beautiful visuals for Steve Roach's "Lost Pieces Vol. 4", "Immersion: One" and design of "Circuit Mandala" Timeroom clothing.
Now it's time to explore the sonic talent of this Texas based artist. All above facts display that we are ready to take some deep immersing intergalactic journey. With opening "Drift" starts this voyage into the cosmos and it absorbs me immediately, absolutely expansive! I am trapped and transported into immense, unexplored realms and there is no way to escape... Even if based on dark drones, "A Distant Light" album is always evolving and moving from deeper and darker space ambience like "Drift", "Inevitability", "Malus" and "Mist And Myth" to the more lighter and brighter side of space travels like "Wellspring", "Threshold", "The Arrival" or "Twilight". Very interesting, precisely crafted and complex sonic textures where each of 8 tracks is an unique emotional experience and journey for the listener.
Not only musically, but also visually, because glossy 6-panel disc eco wallet features except already mentioned amazing cover image also some interesting drawings of The Wright Flyer and Lunar Module. "A Distant Light" CD is a very strong and impressive debut and it's highly recommended to each serious listener and collector of deep space genre. I will keep an eye on Hollan Holmes, because I can't wait to hear more from him in the future.
