2 Brothers Motorcycle Tour 2015
Video from my motorcycle trip with my brother from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy - August 27th - September 3rd 2015
Day 3: Switzerland
We crossed into Switzerland and rode up to Altdorf, over Sustenpass, and down to Meiringen. It was the best possible day of riding, with clear skies and temperatures in the low to mid 30's centigrade.
Swiss Border to Altdorf
Crossing the Swiss Border from France at Basel on the French A35, traveling along the 3 and then the 2, skirting Lucerne and reaching Altdorf - the start of the Alpine passes - for a coffee.
(The timestamp on the first video is wrong - I'm blaming the temperature, 38 degrees as the Swiss border!)
We were melting in our full motorcycle armour. When we stopped for a coffee in Altdorf, one of the local Italian Swiss riders wearing a short sleeved shirt, beach shorts, and flip-flops parked his 1980s California 2 next to my Cali.
Altdorf to Meiringen - over Susten Pass (2224m)
Sustenpass was given No 1 place in a list of the best alpine passes for motorcycling in Germany's Motorrad magazine in 2015.
We stopped at the top to admire the view from the mountain top cafe, and ran into a large group of people in traditional Swiss dress. Turned out they were Mennonites on a trip over from Dutch County in Pennsylvania. I've been to a Mennonite farm in Dutch County, but had never seen Mennonites in Europe before, so to meet a bus load of them at the top of Sustenpass was quite a shock! Their ancestors were from Zurich they told us and they were leaders traveling back to their homeland.
We took a seat in the cafe veranda for our coffees, and there was an impossibly good looking young couple behind us. As they left we watched them walk back to their bikes. The girl, with long black hair, amazing sleeve tattoos on her arms, had black leather trousers and motorcycle boots and puut on her black leather jacket and helmet before jumping on her black sportsbike and competently riding off down the tunnel back to Altdorf. The boy with her - in white leathers - shot off after her exitedly on his sportsbike and - to our amazement - pulled a 200 yard wheelie into the tunnel and disappeared after his girlfriend. How I wish I'd got a video of that subtle, rather Freudian, example of Italian Swiss motorcycle courting rituals!
Filmed with a Replay Mini HD 1080 helmet cam.
Another video of Sustenpass from a German rider in 2012 is available here:
One of the highest paved roads in Europe, Susten Pass (el. 2262 m.) is a mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. The pass road, built from 1938–1945, connects Innertkirchen in the canton of Bern with Wassen in the canton of Uri. A 300 metres long tunnel crosses the pass at 2,224 metres. The pass is popular with bikers and tourists, especially for the views of the Stein Glacier on the south side. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susten_Pass
