Took my first ride without L plates today and headed in to the Harley Davidson dealership in Glasgow. Spend the morning borrowing two of their bikes: a Sportster Forty Eight and a Fat Bob Special.
I was not overly keen on the Forty Eight. The mirrors under the handlebars were difficult to use, such as when a removal truck on the Clydeside Expressway decided to move out as I was passing it. That resulted in a near miss. Also, the ride position was uncomfortable, with the handlbars and foot forward controls meaning a real 'rowing' position that I did not enjoy. The exhaust which HD had fitted to it was wild though, but I would be deaf after a week riding it even with earplugs.
The Fat Bob Special was fantastic. Great sound, amazing low down torque, fantastic road presence, lovely balance from low center of gravity of the 330 odd Kg. Very comfortable riding position - my first ride with foot boards and what a joy they are - like riding on an armchair. This is the kind of bike I learned to ride to ride. Nobody bothered me on this bike - no tailgating drivers on this ride.
