Amusing but embarrassing story about how I failed my Mod 2 Motorcycle Test on Friday.
Coming off the Clyde Tunnel my examiner asked me to take a slip road I'd never taken before, but I had taken the parallel road from the Clydeside Expressway many times. Uniquely, as it turns out, the road is a 40mph zone if you come from the Clydeside Expressway Glasgow, but the exact same stretch of road is a 30mph zone if you come from the Clyde Tunnel. Not realising this (ie: failing to follow the cardinal rule of 'what was the last sign you passed'), I accelerated briskly up to 40mph to join the traffic from the Clydeside Expressway coming in from lane 2, only to find a Traffic Unit sitting in a layby just before the 40mph sign pointing a radar gun at me!
My examiner started shouting in my ear on the radio to warn me, but too late. Other than that I rode fine, but upon returning to the test centre the Traffic Police called up the examiner to make sure he had failed me. How embarassing - my instructor knows I'm IAM and blue-light driver trained - and once the examiner found that out, he wanted to know what the **** I was thinking when I accelerated on the slip road. He felt really bad about failing me, but I had to reassure him that it was not his fault that I had imagined a 40mph sign (although, in my defence, I've never seen a road where the speed limit is different depending on which side you join it from).
Anyway, my instructor thought this was a riot - he'd never had a student radar gunned by the traffic police - nor had the examiner.
Never thought I'd be laughing at failing my test. How embarrassing. (I'm just hoping I don't get a ticket in the post as well!)
Retest is 12th December.
