MAN TO LAUNCH HIMSELF FROM A ROCKET TO PROVE WORLD IS FLAT…. The countdown to launch creeps closer and there’s still plenty for self-taught rocket scientist “Mad” Mike Hughes to do: Last-second modifications to his vessel. Pick up his flight suit. Leave enough food for his four cats — just in case anything happens. Hughes is a 61-year-old limo driver who’s spent the last few years building a steam-powered rocket out of salvage parts in his garage. His project has cost him $20,000, which includes Rust-Oleum paint to fancy it up and a motor home he bought on Craigslist that he converted into a ramp. His first test of the rocket will also be the launch date — Saturday , when he straps into his homemade contraption and attempts to hurtle over the ghost town of Amboy, California. He will travel about a mile at a speed of roughly 500 mph. The daredevil/limo driver has been called a little bit of everything over his career — eccentric, quirky, foolhardy. Doesn’t bother him. He believes what he believes, including that the Earth is flat. He knows this thought is a conundrum, given that he’s about to launch himself into the atmosphere. Down the road, he’s intending to build a rocket that takes him to space, so he can snap a picture and see with his own eyes. “I don’t believe in science,” said Hughes, whose main sponsor for the rocket is Research Flat Earth. “I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.” This will actually be the second time he’s constructed and launched a rocket. He jumped on a private property in Winkelman, Arizona, on Jan. 30, 2014 , and traveled 1,374 feet. He collapsed after that landing — the G-forces taking a toll — and needed three days to recover.
WOMAN RAISES $20,000 FOR HOMELESS MAN WHO USED HIS LAST $20 TO HELP HER…. A New Jersey woman who was helped by a homeless man when she ran out of gas in Philadelphia is raising money to help him. Kate McClure was heading to Philadelphia to visit a friend last month when she ran out of gas on Interstate 95. The Florence Township woman pulled over and began to worry until a homeless man approached her. The man, whose name was "Johnny," told her it wasn't safe and he bought McClure gas with his last $20. McClure promised she would return to pay him. McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, have since raised over $20,000 for the former ammunition technician. He was
The pair hope to get "Johnny" an apartment and help with transportation. “Blown Away” by their gesture …..
JAPANESE WOMAN ADMITS PUTTING NEWBORN BABIES IN CONCRETE BUCKETS, KEEPING THEM FOR 20 YEARS…. A Japanese woman was arrested Tuesday after police say she confessed to putting four newborns in concrete-filled buckets two decades ago and having been filled with guilt over not caring for her babies. Human remains were identified in four buckets found in her condominium, an Osaka police official said, requesting anonymity due to department policy. Mayumi Saito, 53, was arrested Tuesday on charges of abandoning bodies, a day after she turned herself in at the police station. Saito was quoted by police as saying she put the bodies into concrete from 1992 through 1997 because she had been too poor to raise them, but she had been filled with guilt over the years.
CONVICTED TERRORIST CLAIMS HE WAS MENTALLY INCOMPETENT, ENTRAPPED BY FBI…. An Ohio man serving 30 years in prison for plotting to attack the U.S. Capitol in support of the Islamic State group wants his plea and sentence thrown out, arguing that he was mentally incompetent and was entrapped by the FBI. Christopher Lee Cornell, 23, of suburban Cincinnati recently sent his motion to vacate from a federal prison in Fairton, N.J. FBI agents arrested him in January 2015 after he bought guns and ammunition, which investigators said were to be used to attack during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address. Cornell’s motion states that he was lured into the plot and encouraged by an FBI informant. It states that the FBI manufactured the case by taking advantage of his mental illness. “This is one of the many cases where the FBI created and facilitated a phoney terrorist plot to make it appear as though they are doing their job and winning the so-called ’War on Terror,’” the motion states. Cornell said his counsel should have pursued defences of incompetency and entrapment. Martin Pinales, who was his lead attorney, said Tuesday he couldn’t comment because he hadn’t yet seen the motion.
An FBI spokesman didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment. Cornell pleaded guilty in 2016 to three charges including attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees. His attorneys had raised questions about his mental state, but a federal judge ruled him competent to stand trial after hearing expert testimony.
GIANT SWASTIKA UNEARTHED IN GERMANY…. Construction workers in Germany have unearthed a giant concrete swastika on a sports field in the northern city of Hamburg.
The German news agency dpa reported Tuesday workers were digging in the ground with an excavator to build changing rooms when they suddenly hit the four-by-four meter (13-by-13 foot) Nazi symbol. Members of the sports club at the Hein-Kling stadium in the city's Billstedt district told dpa the swastika served as a foundation for a monument that was torn down decades ago. A giant Swastika-shaped foundation sits on construction site in Hamburg, northern Germany, Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 after it was discovered during construction works on a sport field the day before. The foundation was base of a statue during Nazi times and remained undiscovered for more than 70 years. (Christian Charisius/dpa via AP)
City officials say they want the swastika, which was buried 40 centimetres (1.3 feet) below the ground, gone as quickly as possible. Because it's too heavy to be transported away, they are planning to destroy it with jackhammers.
