This is what I’ve been working on for 6 months for my show at the @theafoundation , but unfortunately it has been pushed back to 2021 due to this damn pandemic... that being said, I’m going to be posting photos of it:
This particular installation was intimately inspired by one of my favorite songs of all time, “Bloom” by Radiohead. Thom was inspired by movements and organic shapes of the ocean.
The inspiration also came from a painting technique called pointillism, which small dots and points create a complete image. The song correlates with its different sounds communicating as certain imagery in small parts to eventually give form to the image.
I wanted to explore the idea of ‘synesthesia’ - which is an instance where one sense (like sound) is perceived by another sense (sight). In this case, I related the piano loops and drum beats in the song to a cluster of tube-like shapes, in which the installation came to fruition back in 2018 when I did my first gallery show. Since then, I expanded from that 1000 piece installation to 6000, and 1 type of coral into 8.
In 2016, @radiohead redefined the progressional rock song into an orchestra ensemble, using a technique called ‘tidal orchestra,’ where they use a number of violinists to play certain notes at different tempos and speeds to create an atmosphere and foundation. This is where the installation and it’s forms come into play: the smaller forms represent higher pitched notes and the larger forms represent drums, bass, etc which gives the installation a feeling of completion while listening.
This installation is made up of 100% hand rolled coils and took 6 months to complete. Each piece ranges 1/2 an inch to 2 feet tall. There are 9 types of clay used - the variations of whites and pinks of the bisque ware is apparent. About 90% of the installation is bisque ware and will remain that way for energy efficiency.
