Ukrainian filmmaker and political prisoner Oleg Sentsov has been on hunger strike for 77 days in the Polar Bear Penal Colony in Labytnangi, Nenets-Yamalo Autonomous District, Russia, located north of the Arctic Circle. Mr. Sentsov, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison on trumped-up charges of "terrorism," has made only one demand: that the Kremlin release all the other Ukrainian political prisoners, many of them from Crimea, like Mr. Sentsov, or Crimean Tatars, who were deported en masse from their ancestral homeland by Stalin during WWII.
During his trial and, now, his hunger strike, Mr. Sentsov has enjoyed tremendous support from the international cinema community.
