Eight years ago at this time I was in the forests of Tuscany, learning the lost cultural art of traditional charcoal making from an 80-year-old 'carbonaro'. We spent eight days constructing a vertically stacked kiln with local materials (including sustainably harvested wood), lighting the kiln, and monitoring the carbonization process until its opening on the eighth day. The charcoal was then spread out on the forest floor and cooled before collection.
After this process, I made a series of drawings using the charcoal we had made. These drawings were a narrative and a representation of the experience and memory of working in the landscape, building the kiln.
I intend to include some more images of this project in the following days. I'm also picking up some old film from the developer later today. Excited to see what might be in the mix.
