Multiples. How I've been plagued by thee. Who would have guessed? A functional potter having trouble figuring out what kind of multiple to do. I was inspired reading some of Robert Smithson's ramblings on crystals as being the perfect "counter" to the grid. Where as the structure of minimalism is controlled, crystals develop from inherent material imperfections, extruded from heat and pressure. The crystal to Smithson was more a formula than a shape. I thought about this idea in the framework of consumption. What instability in the "grids" of our day to day life have us reach for alcohol or caffeine? How do we use these substances to disrupt or augment our transformations traversing the grid?
My multiples will be these inherently asymmetrical crystal like vessels, printed, made into a plaster mold, and then slip casted into multiple whiskey or espresso cups. I will paint a face at random with a small portrait of "pressure and heat" that galvanize the ritual of imperfect living involved in grabbing the vessel. Mass extinction, GTA exploitation.. there are maybe too many faces of adversity to pull from!
