The High Priestess
Our spirituality is the highest form of contemplation Humanity can express. It is at once an emotive state that is deeply personal and yet, at the same time, it takes us out of ourselves through metaphysical thoughts and makes us exceptionally connective to others and all life on this planet. We can enter into it as quietly as when we encounter something beautiful - the intense colors of trees turning in autumn - or when we relax our minds and connect to the wealth of our unconsciousness for creative inspirations, entering the "zone".
The High Priestess is the guardian of this Zone. She sits at the mouth of a freshwater spring, the chill of secrecy from the Earth's first things, whose cold waters mingle with her robes that fall like water in stages over the rocks. This is knowledge passing back and forth from being at its most alert to being in its deepest sleep. Her foot gently stirs these waters creating a ripple that spreads out toward the viewer. It is a powerful, connecting motion. On her lap she holds in a suggestive pose a pomegranate branch, the symbol of abundance, fertility, and good luck. She wears armor that emphasizes her female form furthering a strong yet sensual element to her being. Under her right arm is the Book of Knowledge and or scripture and between the fingers of her right hand angles a Talisman who's thin, golden chain holds the changing phases of the Moon.
This card reminds us that knowledge isn't so much about the accumulation of facts as it is about appreciating and making a personal connection to the world around us, to take in the whole of our surroundings, to receive its gifts, and to give back even greater. This is how we move into our future. This is how we manifest our dreams in small ripples that spread out wide in the world.
