Ello Isn't A Facebook Killer, But Tumblr Should Be Worried:
In the rush to join Ello, it seems people may have jumped the gun on declaring the site a Facebook killer. Obviously, Ello's call for less direct advertising and more control over your data is a swipe against Facebook, but when it comes down to the actual user experience, the site feels more like a challenge to Tumblr.
The #Discover feature, for instance, formats itself like a Tumblr layout. There is immediate support for .GIFs both in the posts and the headers, which is the main mode of conversing on Tumblr. There has already been (in what may be the first viral post on the site) a call for more inclusivity and gender parity at the top, which is something more often seen on Tumblr than Facebook.
Obviously it's early -- and as more people join the site in the coming days, and more features are rolled out, things could change. But I'm willing to bet Ello becomes the preferred social media tool for artists and creative types who were, for whatever reason, unable to embrace Tumblr. Facebook will, for the time being, still remain -- the proverbial landline jack which, though we all abhor it, occasionally comes in handy.
