I think what I find most frustrating about comedy is that there will always be an audience for bad jokes. Hateful, bigoted, sexist, xenophobic jokes - there are a lot of people who think that stuff is really funny. And comedians who find stages among those people, and get in the habit of going for those laughs, are truly making things worse.
And I'm a firm believer in the no-heckle code. Or at least I thought I was. I've sat through horrifyingly misogynist sets biting my tongue, wishing I could throw tomatoes at them. Why should the "sanctity" of the comedian's microphone give all these assholes a pass?
There's so much good standup, but SO MUCH BAD standup. I get so turned off knowing we're giving ignorant idiots a stage and a microphone. And sometimes they do well because they're playing to ignorant idiots (hellooooo small town Alberta), and they go along their way believing they're right, and gaining access to bigger stages to spread more ugliness.
And I can hear the purist standup arguments retorting: "freedom of speech!" "they're trying stuff out!" "they'll get weeded out over time!" "what you think is hateful might be cool tho!" I dunno. Any joke that takes aim at disadvantaged groups or individuals is a bad joke. And most shitty comedians linger in their local scenes for decades. I'm really hoping my city can transcend beyond our comedic reputation (which is racist, sexist, etc) but I'm not holding my breath.
Would anyone like to offer a positive note here? Perk a girl up?
