Truffaut’s breakthrough film is as fragile as it is rebellious, in both its portrayal of youth and its approach to filmmaking. Little known fact: The 400 Blows is a false interpretation of the original French title, coming from the French expression ‘faire les quatre cents coups’. This means ‘to live a wild life‘, as the main character does. ‘To do the 400 dirty tricks’ would be a literal translation of the expression.
