Film poster for The Matrix (USA, 1999), directed by Lana & Lilly Wachowski. On the surface it’s a slick, thrill-inducing action film, but beneath it lies an existential, dystopian, biblical and thought-provoking parable on the illusion of reality and free will, where humans are slaves of society and technology. All this injected with a mix of film noir, anime and steam punk.
Little known fact: Belinda McClory assumed she was only auditioning for half a role, since the character Switch was originally planned to be played by androgynous actors: a male actor in the real world and female actor in the Matrix. (Therefore the name Switch.) In the end, McClory ended up getting a single female role in both environments.
