just finished a track for the new lines community remix project. the idea is that every participant submits 2 samples, one melodic and one rhythmic (these are not hard rules, so really any 2 samples that you think would make a good source), and then you make a track using only these samples and nothing else.
i abandoned a couple of earlier attempts - it can be pretty heartbreaking to spend a month on something just to realise it's not going to work. the third attempt started with a sample that is still there in the final version, and it carried the track from start to finish. everything fell into place after that, but there was a moment where i had to abandon what i thought was a good part as it just didn't fit. the rest was easy - 2 months of tweaking automation curves, finding little bits to fit here and there, and then trying to make it into a coherent flowing track.
there are 30 parts in total, 10 of them are instances of fxpansion Guru used for different drum parts. the main sample that was used is a field recording made in Cuba, i wish i knew what the man in the opening sample is actually saying... and it just so happened that when i placed the whole sample at the end it just worked without any additional editing.
