ATTN - THIS IS MY MESSAGE TO ALL QUEERS AND EQUAL PEOPLE. I KNOW THIS MIGHT CAUSE A STIR:
I identify myself as a gay man and I usually tend to attend gay events, bars or clubs. Due to my awareness on the past recent years, I can easily say I am sad and embarrassed for gay culture. I'm gonna make a few enemies saying this but "queer" culture as a whole has a long way to go due to the fact that maybe,....just maybe we are a large part of the problem.
Catch your attention? Good. Keep reading. I might be into something no one has the balls to say.
You/We want to be treated equal. You may want marriage rights. We want to have your cake and eat it to just like everyone else. We are a community. Yet, have you ever wondered how odd it is that nothing innovative comes out of gay community concerning clubs or fests? Same old stereotypes are running through your mind right now probably.
How can we make this better? Don't you think the scene can be of an obnoxious and somewhat outdated gameplan? It's ok - we can't help following in the footsteps of our fellow gays but I will tell you that I am no sheep. Huddle up queers - it might be time to rethink and regroup.
When you go to a Pride fest - we can expect these things to occur(these things are actually not the issue but factors to the major issue):
We are a group literally "peacocking" about whatever city we choose to have said Fest in. We, of all ages are in the fray, showing how flashy we are with our bright colors and our rainbow flags. We show up among our population of gay fellow friends and family enjoying drinks and parades as we walk around and meat gaze as the diva house techno plays. Drag queens make their rounds to entertain and do their shows because you know - drag queens deserve the attention they work for. You go there to enjoy the hedonism and man candy you have been oh so sexually repressed from due to our blind society as strippers or cocktail boys strut their muscular bodies. Its the perfect time to leave your mind at home and enjoy the romp and ridiculousness. The thinking is already done for you. It sounds fantastic - like a gay 'Neverland' but......Would you be willing to say that on a certain level this could be seen as a childlike or misguided response to how society views?
That's the problem.
We may have lost sight of the entire point of pride fest. Not only that, but pride isn't what we really should be pushing for. The same elements exist in gay clubs alike. America already knows gays are proud. Keep moving and improving within the community.
I can talk shit all day but lets talk new solutions concerning the tactics within queer culture and how we represent ourselves. Ultimately, How can we show 'them' we are equal and desire to be equal without conforming to washed up traditions?
Pride-Fest to me is purposeful but in some aspects it is money and sex driven. Ritualizing a movement which was once for equality and awareness has dulled and is now running a dusty circuit just to make money and has lost its core meaning. This doesn't knock any charities involved and good things that do come out of these money raising events. I'm gonna step on some toes and say I suspect that especially the older queer generation, as well as the current and new need to think outside the box. I'm not chastising anyone personally.
We are all to blame especially since we are following suit to what is now a common tradition in our world.
So here is my hypothetical Equalityfest dream:
I have a dream where all equal people "pridefully" gather together either wearing the same colors in unison and joins together just like you would Pride fest. Nothing flashy, because that is not the concept. Perhaps, a person should be the speaker and leader of this movement as he builds morale with kind words which open hearts and leads them down main streets as they hold hands. This is less of a festival and more of a movement that I can see reaching tabloids.
All because we thought outside the box.
No drag queens. No strippers. No outdated horrible diva house techno music. No money needed. No shouts or discussion for gay rights.
WE DESERVE RESPECT AS HUMAN BEINGS FIRST (duh)
Remove the common stereotypes and the sex.
Its 2014 - you don't have to let everyone know you are still here. Let people know with your solidarity not your flair that you are human, equal,....oh and queer. Celebrate your pride after the Festival or movement. Granted its some hippy sounding shit. But that is how i envision pride. I bet it will shock people who expect the same old shit.
That's pride. That's equality. That's my dream.
P.S. Stop with the diva house techno. Please. Please.....
