Photographing JMT Part I - Day 1 thru 11
This is Part I of the John Muir Trail thru-hike that my JMT buddy Henry and I did back in August this year. My objective was to photograph the amazing landscapes of the Sierra Nevada as much as I could while backpacking the distance.
It was an amazing 31-day journey that I was able to complete, in spite of all the unforeseen events, as I was fully committed to walk away with a plenty of photos that I could showcase the world.
We were going to begin our JMT journey from Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley, but the Ferguson Fire, which devastated over 96,000 acres of land and led to the closure of the park for 2 weeks, prevented us from getting access to the valley.
Regrettably, we had to start our hike from Tuolumne Meadows, which was only accessible via the east entrance of the park on Tioga Road (SR 210). Logistics are often the most difficult part of the long distance hikes, and instead of entering the park from the west as we had planned, we drove around the entire mountain range from Visalia to get to US 395 so that we could get on SR 210.
Ashes were falling when we arrived at Tuolumne Meadows and were still falling next morning. We breathed the smoke and felt our lungs filled with it. However, it didn't deter us from bailing. We were determined do it no matter what, and that was why we got there in the first place. While picking up our permit, we were told that many hikers cancelled the wilderness permit.
This Part I covers the first 11 days on the JMT. We climbed over 3 passes (Donohue, Island and Silver Passes), swam in Thousand Island Lake, one of the iconic lakes in the world, hiked by Devils Postpile, and camped at Duck Lake. We picked up our first resupply at Reds Meadow.
I took 2TB worth of photos in 31 days. And here's the timelapse movie that I put together. Hope you enjoy it.
Part II is coming soon. Please subscribe to this channel to get notified when Part II is uploaded. And please share this movie with your friends and photographers who would love it. Thanks!
