Unfolding before my eyes
JMT DAY 17 - MOONRISE AND SUNSET AT HELEN LAKE
Moonrise and sunset at Helen Lake
Helen Lake was only a mile down the slope from Muir Pass, so we didn’t rush. However, we had been told that finding a campsite could be a slight challenge, so we decided to get off the pass earlier than later.
What we didn’t know was that it was extremely windy as if we were in a wind tunnel. The strong wind that never seemed to die down gave us a hard time pitching our tents. For a better vantage point, I decided to find a spot rather higher.
From where I was, the sun looked like setting over Muir Pass. At that very moment I wondered what it would look like to watch the sun set from the pass. There were campsites near Muir Hut but it wasn’t an option due to lack of water, besides the fact that it was super windy. I turned out that Helen Lake wasn’t much different.
The lukewarm glow cast on Black Divide soon turned into a bright orange as if somebody just painted it in a quick brush stroke of orange in a blink of an eye. And then an insanely glowing red.
While my eyes were transfixed on the mesmerizing glow in spite of the crazy shiver I couldn’t seem to stop, unfolding before my eyes was one of those unexpected and yet coolest.
Moonrise over the divide cast in insane red!
I knew the moon would rise and wash out the Milky Way, but I really didn’t see this coming. What a sight to end the day!
