Yearning for Whitney
I finally made out to Alabama Hills in early May and spent a few days to capture what I had been visualizing in my head. Obviously, a sight of Mt. Whitney at sunrise was one of them that I was dying to photograph. In particular, that iconic imagery - the thin strip of red glow cast across the top of the mountains always lingered in my mind.
This BLM managed high desert range offered so many different forms and shapes of rocks, which makes it literally a photographer’s playground in my opinion. One of the subjects that I knew I would be spending some time on from the start was Mobius Arch, and I wanted to photograph the breathtaking view of Mt. Whitney seen through the arch at sunrise. But it turned out that it demanded a fair amount of patience and perseverance, three days to be exact, through rain storms and constant showers.
The night when I arrived was a full moon night, which meant it wasn’t the most ideal time to capture the Milky Way. But, I also realized that there was no way to compose a shot of the arch and the tallest peak in the contiguous US along with our galaxy at the same time, even if the weather permitted. Although the clouds and constant rain interfered for two days and nights in a row, I must say I loved every moment of it. It was cold at night and the gales of winds constantly forced me to hang onto the hood of my jacket and my 15 degree sleeping bag, but what I had the days and nights of solitude.
I’ll be hiking Mt. Whitney this August, part of my epic backpacking trip this summer, and hopefully everything will go well, like it did two years ago when I did the High Sierra Trail, which ended at the summit as well. I am planning to catch the sunrise from the summit again, like the last time I did.
