Potter received her BFA from the University of Utah and her MFA in painting from Laguna College of Art and Design, where she is currently mentoring in their MFA program. She teaches at National University and Mt. San Antonio Community College. She creates paintings in oil on birch panel or canvas as well as drawings with mixed media charcoal and pastel, on cotton rag paper.
These paintings are part of a series of oil paintings that contrast the candy hues and higher key palette reminiscent of the golden age American Illustrators (such as Norman Rockwell and J.C. Lyendecker), with a sardonic narrative, that places adults in childlike situations. By pairing contemporary and vintage elements, the paintings speak to the transitory nature of time, and the relevance of early experience in shaping who we become. My work is largely personal, drawing on my own challenges as a woman raised in a patriarchal society, particularly in a conservative religious community, in an effort to evoke a connection with the viewer.
