10/18/2014 MORE THAN 77 MILLION RECORDS HACKED SO FAR IN 2014
With the advent and emergence of recording devices (pens, paper, ink, cave walls, sticks, sand, magnets, silicon, electricity, gravity, DNA etc) the universe was set on an unavoidable collision course with an awareness of itself. What is a recording if not the creation of an instance of memory? Something that can then be presumably referenced and drawn upon, repressed, overlooked, remembered for later etc. Hell, time itself not being much more than the seemingly continuous recollection of empirically subjective drum beats that continue at rhythms both agreed upon and prayed to; and only really as long as there are those willing and like able to even dance in the first place; and these drum beats are recorded and stored and protected and shared and coveted and lost and treasured and forgotten and accumulated and accumulated and accumulated and mined and stolen and pondered over and analyzed and focused on and etc, operated on so to speak by the one or many. These vast stores of information about instances of happenings- names, locations, purchases, meetings, feelings, pictures, hopes, wishes, fears etc- are pieced together and analyzed for the emergence of patterns and narratives to be used as predictions about any given future. If we fail to recognize the past, we are doomed to repeat it! But if we can record smaller and smaller increments of the past, shine more and more precise lasers on increasingly finer instances of time, surely we can determine what any given person will want and/or do in the future; and we can optimize what we do in response and we can maximize profits. When we reach a collective fork in the road we can look back through our memory, through the data, analyze past experiences, how we felt when we were rejected, what we did immediately before and after purchasing gasoline and tampons, and determine whether or not to issue Cust# Z001717695DFXLZ a low interest credit card account or a coupon for free shipping; or to take a shit before going to see a movie. And 77 million of those memories have been hacked; who you are has been intruded upon, your memory has been unlocked and your future can now be predicted with increasing degrees of accuracy and subscription; your records know you better than you know yourself and now some of those are like, out there man. You are what you do, you are what you did, what you bought, your habits; and most of that stuff is buried deep down in your cells and genes and biological clock and not even accessible to you in any form other than urges, elation and aggravations- actions, repetitive and plastic. And those actions and that plasticity, over time, become You; and that is increasingly written down and stored and made available as the shared memory of shared electricity and that record has been hacked. Or could be hacked. Or will be hacked; according to the news. Anything you do or say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion; anything you subscribe to or purchase, borrow, lend or pay for outright will be recorded and processed for future analysis at which time you will be notified, prompted, invited, coerced in some optimized fashion as determined by either the owner or the possessor, or both, of said memory. Terms and conditions may apply. See store for details. And it was reported that the total number of data breaches increased by seventeen in the week of October 14th, and the medical/health care sector continues to post the largest percentage of the total breaches; 43% to be exact, or 259 out of 606; and the number of records exposed totaled 7.15 million. And of those 7.15 million were probably high fasting blood glucose readings, all manner of c-reactive protein measurements and lipid panel results; there were some diagnoses and genetic testings, some records revealed that some people buy a lot of Miller Genuine Draft while others write checks at massage parlors; some records showed that some people actually traveled to Utah when they told their husband that they were traveling to the home office on business, which is in Chicago- and while they purchased a plane ticket, there were no charges for any hotels. Pretty much every record stolen indicated a purchase of gasoline at one point or another, while some others purchased cigarettes and most lives continued unaware of being unaware while their memory was picked clean off the bone; and credit was extended and denied, rates dropped and raised; and insurance premiums were re-calculated as new information became available. Each instance of time squirreled away onto some obsessively organized Disk to await interpretation by some algorithm; some fortune teller with elaborate theories and a statistical toolbox would rent a boat and go fishing for your future in order to maximize profit, provide you with supreme comfort, efficiency, savings and/or relieve you of some service or membership where you no longer or never did qualify. The experts they called them had put the card readers and tea leaf folks plum out of business; make way for the economists and data scientists; +/- .05 standard deviations and based on a very serious list of assumptions in the finest of print, these were the people who mined the data- whether hacked into, stumbled upon, gleaned or simply granted access to by opting into or not opting out of et cetera and so on. Free will, once declared, once written down, once patterned over became determinate; and the proof was in the pudding. You’d bought pudding. According to your bonus card you’d bought pudding 27 times over the course of the last 52 weeks: often you’d bought it in response to coupons, obtained through both mailers and at the register; but most of the time Just Because; and this told them a lot about you- where, when, how much et cetera and so on; and now someone, lots of people actually, knew all about it and were plotting in all manner of unknown ways to insert prompts into your daily life, from any and all conceivable angles and via any and all conceivable mediums, conspiring to get you to buy more pudding, or worse! A competitor’s product. These hackers inserting themselves into your memory in order to influence and optimize your free will for their benefit. And it could begin at any time or not at all, it was hard to tell really. I mean there was a lot of data collected and only some of it hacked into and it will be some time before we can determine what the impact will be stay tuned for details more at 11:00pm: EXCLUSIVE, EXCLUSIVE, EXCLUSIVE!
