Artist Statement: People were created to be loved, things were created to be used, the reason the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used
There has long been a correlation observed between materialism, a lack of empathy and engagement with others, and unhappiness.
My work explores what it would be like to break away from materialism and consumerism. I wanted to show a connecting with the earth and letting go off 'the want' to possess material things.
There is a slightly dark undercurrent through my work showing the difficulty that anyone who has been conditioned in a modern society will feel when they start the process of turning their back on the materialistic world. Sandra Cisneros, in 1954 said 'I have to remind myself to live simply and not overindulge, which is a constant battle in a material world.”
To go from today's 'more, more, more' society that we have been molded in since the day we were born, to one that does not value such materialist things is not so straightforward.
We must recondition ourselves and my work shows that struggle but ultimately that fulfillment when it is within grasp.
“The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.” ~ Socrates

To be chosen for a grant would mean being able to explore, discover, research and process more issues through my art photography. It would mean I could share my work with a wider audience and ultimately grow as an artist.
