Remembering my friend Dan Valle, who died 8 years ago in a bike accident on the Williamsburg bridge. I met Dan at FIT in the fall of 2002. Among the many patches on his black hooded sweatshirt, was Skitsystem. I was shocked anyone else knew who they were. We chatted and he told me about this band Diskonto, he lent me their tape and also lent me a book on tape called The People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. The next time I saw him he invited me to a punk show at ABC No Rio featuring a band called Tragedy... that sealed the deal, we were buddies.
Halloween 2003, we dressed up as characters from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. We used to crack each other up so bad. One night we were playing "What's the most ridiculous Japanese Hardcore band?". I thought I had it won with D.S.B (Defiance of Shit Bastards) but Dan was crowned victorious when he recalled a band called Bathtub Shitter. We were up all night laughing about that one! It's hard when a close friend dies, I've found great strength from Caitlin Doughty's book Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. I also love making these drawings of him every year. Love you, Dan!
