In order to understand a thing’s relevance, we need its adverse or adjacent-other to compare it to. My paintings reside in this flux - romanticism overlapping progress - in order to understand how the photo functions as cultural memory.
In my paintings, I reappropriate traditional techniques by deconstructing current understanding and meaning to better gain new and different usages.
Echoing the printer, I use only four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The work develops in the same manner as a print, left to right. The finished product hangs like a movie screen, slightly swaying when a person walks by, disrupting its ether.

Lauren Bergman (@lauren_bergman)
Lauren Bergman grew up in Washington, D.C., before relocating to Manhattan to study painting and design at Parson’s School of Design and The Art Students League in New York. Bergman's work probes a loss of cultural optimism and the ongoing irresolution of such post-feminist issues as sexuality versus intellectualism, passivity and acquiescence versus ambition. The work courts irony and the inner narratives are playful, yet confront the conflicting expectations of contemporary culture and the intricately complex ways in which we form our identities.
Bergman currently lives in Manhattan and her studio is at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ.
