Today marked a new beginning, and it feels amazing. I have contemplated for a while my social media presence and why it is necessary at all. Everyone that is important in my life has always been able to contact me via phone or email, or if it is urgent then by text while on the go; so why do I need it?
My main gripe has always been with the giant of all platforms, Facebook. What was a really ingenious way of communication for friends and family has slowly become a platform for people that used to share interesting events in their lives and hold conversations, to regurgitate content copied from other sources, and to be honest, it's not even that interesting.
The next stage of demise for the platform was when even though I have followed friends business pages and see their content when they post, they share that to their personal feed just to make sure it is seen. If I have seen it once, I don't need to see it again. Also if I want to watch the news or find out a bit more about a certain event or subject that interests me, I'll do that.
For those that have held a conversation with me over a coffee or beer, you will know I am quite informed about current affairs, I listen to podcasts on subjects that interest me, and interviews of people that inspire, I read journalism from sources that spend more time researching one article than most media outlets do in a year.
I try to keep my views to myself unless asked as I believe everyone has a right to make up their own minds. If someone disagrees with me on a subject then I have this ability given to me at birth called listening, which again in turn allows me to make an informed decision and maybe even change my views. I do not hold it against anyone for thinking differently or taking a different point of view, it is what makes us all interesting.
And so I say good riddance to the pest of community communication and informed information and say hello to the friends that take the time to get out of their feeds to pick up the phone or to have a meal with the people that they treasure. Don't worry, staying on @ello :)
