*Our rope team, sans rope.
Braving 50mph gusts 500m from the summit.
I hike solo often, Saturday started off no different.
San Gorgonio had been dusted with a new coat of snow a few days prior and I wanted to get up there and have some fun in it!
Passed a few people on the way up, mainly those under-dressed or with no microspikes/crampons.
Got to High Camp, approximately 6 miles in and met @Hike_The_Hype and his crew.
Decided to continue on with them as the route was getting difficult to manage solo and they were all fun to hike with!
Scaled a 45% slope for about 0.3 miles, shaving a whole additional mile off that section of the trail and all of us really getting to have fun with our axes and crampons.
After another 45 minutes we came to the saddle before our final mile to the summit.
At this point we ran into one of the only other groups we saw summit that day, @Altitude_Amy and her friends.
We 3 groups decided to make the final push together, which was a major slog and wasn't going to be quick regardless.
It was tough, the terrain was almost entirely covered in ice, and even when we would find solid rock the gusts of wind (up to 50mph) were constantly trying to knock everyone over.
We made it to the summit but had to immediately find shelter behind one of the few windbreaks which are on the peak.
With the temp pinging -1 all groups decided to not waste time hanging out up top and to get off the summit as quick as possible.
Due to the extreme weather, steep terrain, issues with improperly secured ice protection, and a few batteries dying in a headlamp our rate of travel was slowed dramatically.
We all watched as the afternoon turned to dusk, and then night fell.
The final group of us who stuck together finally reached the trail-head at 10pm, hours later than I am sure anyone could have planned, but safe and without any major injury.
Despite long, it was a great day for me out on the mountain.
Met some new friends, overcame adversity, and everyone made it back. 😁
