STRING THEORY
19 March 2019
I hate velcro
Hate the SHHHKKRRKKKT it makes when it’s ripped apart
So I tie strings
The string you didn’t know you needed
And I tie it with a double knot
Tie strings around my fingers to remember this
Remember that
A string to remember another string that I must connect
To this place
To that person
To her heart
Their heart to yours
As you cannot sleep
Because your dreams are haunted by strings
E, A, D, G, B, and E
Voice memos
Long hikes with headphones to hear the strings of the night before
The hundreds and thousands of faces that are lit when you take a stage
The orchestration of guitar and the percussion under your foot
Chasing that future song that fills that future album that fills that future auditorium
I have a theory
About the future
I was made to make a ball of yarn
That you will unravel
For your naked body
And I dip the split ends on my tongue
So I can thread the needle
You pull the cloth tight
Squeeze it between your fingers
And I sew
Pricking my fingers
Making dabs of blood
And the bedsheets and seatbelts that cover us
Then you heal my fingerprints by tasting my thumb
We drink together
Apart
And others
This is what friends do
I tie strings
The string you didn’t know you needed
And I tie it with a double knot
Tie strings around my fingers to remember this:
We will never be velcro
