THE MOVEMENT YOU PAINT (Booty Tuesdays @ Ole Shakeys, Asheville, North Carolina)
21 January 2019
the movement you paint
in dusty corners with headphones
milk crates of old records that hold hopes and dreams in its grooves
allows us to live a louder life than our reality
when the needle plops down and skips to the intro with a crackle and pop
you hear its emotion before the room does
then you look out into the small sea of moving people
lovers - man and woman - woman and woman - and man and man
predators - with PBRs waiting for an angel to stumble so they can pounce
ex’s - who stalk the one that broke their heart online with a straw and vodka on their lips
you stir them all
make mouths fall onto each other
bodies grind into one
mascara and lipstick redone and done again in broken sticker covered bathroom mirrors
LED flashes of red, yellow and gas lit fire to keep the dance floor from freezing
this is the color of sound when your fingers touch vinyl
Beats Per Minute married to Genres
with a vortex of rhythm and bass
then the drop
...the void...
drunken conversations blast with no music to mask them:
“What’s your name?”
“I want another shot.”
“Who are you texting?”
then your music hits
you sketch love and heartbreak with your backbeats
Asheville misses you when are not in your place
behind the 1s and 2s
no colors from the speakers above when you are gone
we weep when it's not your masterpiece
both those in love
and those alone
you orchestrate the soundtrack of our lives
we are the insatiable
looking for a new love
in the movement you paint
