Let me just say this about today: I am utterly sick to death of fucking morons who try to act as The Voice of Reason, but who are just apologists for racism and a centuries-old mindset that HAS TO FUCKING GO.
While we're on the topic, you know what? SHIT WILL CHANGE. Shit will ALWAYS change, which is kind of ironic when one considers the eternal nature of fuckwit stupidity. I have a friend who loses her shit on Facebook every time a celebrity dies. "Oh no, Leonard Nimoy!" He was EIGHTY THREE AND HAD CANCER. I'm glad he didn't live in pain, and I hope he went out knowing just how much the world loved him. But he was gonna die. The thing that pisses me off about my friend isn't that she's upset about these people dying; it's that it's so transparently obvious that she's terrified of her own life. People who get ticked off about shit changing are fools; change is the only constant in the universe. Chris Wedes died; Bob Newman will, too, and with them will go a bit of Seattle history, and it will be sad.
But spending your whole life looking backwards and lamenting what is gone is just sad. Enjoy the stuff that's in front of you (and this includes getting angry); remember fondly the things that have passed, and look forward to the NEW awesome stuff that's coming. Seattle in the '80s was awesome. We had the Vogue and the Monastery, and Capitol Hill was a blast. But Seattle in the '90s was cool, too. Kyoto in the 2000s was fun. Now is good, too, and the next thing will also be good.
Trying to hang on to the past is like hanging onto water.
Rants are fun, too.
