Incredibly I forgot this happened yesterday or at least forgot to mention it. Walking down a side street to the bus station from where I'd locked the bicycle, in this one particular little ally in every doorway there was a sleeping homeless person. And some were just sleeping or sat with their duvet on the pavement not in any doorway. In the few seconds it took to walk down that road i must have seen at least a couple of dozen. And it felt quite surreal especially when there were personal effects by the side of a duvet cocoon like a handbag. It felt like walking through a strangers bedroom while they're asleep.
But that's not the half of it. This little back alley is alongside the Elysium Tower. There was a bit of a building boom here in Ireland a few years ago, banks were throwing money at developers who in turn were throwing up housing estates and apartment blocks. And a lot of them were left unfinished when the crash came (google 'ghost estates'). This tower (the tallest in the country) was built in that time and a lot of the apartments are empty, they're luxury apartments that not enough people can afford. And for quite some time the tower was completely empty because there was so little demand for them that it was cheaper to have them all empty as opposed to cater for the few they might be able to fill. So a near empty tower of luxury flats surrounded by homeless people. Capitalism fail.
It's late and I'm still at work.
The bus journey was uneventful. I stopped in town to walk the rest of the way in to work - needed the exercise so went via Patrick's Hill. Took photos of various parts of town/me. Had a cup of tea in Cork Coffee Roasters, i would have had coffee but a black coffee would have been too hot to drink quickly and i didn't want to risk them only having the cheap nasty soya milk which curdles in coffee.
And then work, 12 hours later I'm still here.
Phoned about the bike. They're not able to get the part in order to fix it. So tomorrow I'll have push it from one end of town to the other to a shop (where i bought the bike) who does have the part.
