This was actually a comment I wrote on someone else's post, but I want it where it's easier for me to find:
I have written four novels and I haven't figured out what works for me yet. If I don't have a plan at all I resist writing. So I plan. I usually manage to get 20 or so scenes planned before I run out of ideas.
I ideas come to me better as I am actually writing, but with no plan I will make a big mess that I'll never be able to fix.
For the last novel I paused and replanned as I went along. I still managed to get things all twisted. After I was done I realized I could use the custom metadata in scrivener to see the overall picture. I went back and entered what plot thread and whether the scene was action or reaction etc, exported to excel and printed it which allowed me to see the problems a little bit more easily.
Writing is definitely one of those things which get smoother with practice.
