My love of collecting led me to use many objects and found items in my
art; wooden objects, vintage religious statues, animal figurines, various
cast offs, debris, interesting hardware and paper scraps. Many of these
pieces have a past life that is evident in their distressed appearance,
but they also contain energy left from their history that carries many
memories and perhaps emotions. I enjoy creating mixed media constructions that bring attention to the
relationship of the combinations of items to evoke memories or to start
a narrative for the viewers.
In many of my pieces, my subject matter revolves around childhood
memories and imagery. Raised Catholic, many of my pieces feature the
Virgin Mary or Christ, which are comforting and familiar images to me.
I consider much of my art as devotional art, as many of my pieces are
shrines, whether using religious statues, figurines or animals.
I use many dogs, cats and other animals because of my love for animals
and the love and comfort they bring to our lives. My pieces are like small stories waiting to be told, perhaps triggering
memories one forgot they had… Like a song or a fragrance, I believe
that familiar items can bring you back in time. I submitted my work because I like the idea of "recycling" old items into an interesting or comforting piece of art. Thanks, Cathy Cahill
