"Do I bore you?" he asked teasingly. Finally used to the kitten purr of his tone I flatly responded in what I hoped was a bored tone.
"When a person yawns they aren't getting tired in fact it's their body waking itself up because opening your mouth so wide stretches the jaw muscles thus increasing your heart rate and successfully waking you up. But on another note, yes you are boring me," He laughed at my response. That irked me. His eyes crinkled at the corners and his cupid's bow opened wide once more. I melted.
"You are truly one of a kind Zatanna," My eyes snapped up from the smile I’d just been admiring to meet his.
"It's Anna," I said firmly. "Just Anna."
"But that's not your name," He responded with a smirk as he sat forward a little glad to have finally gotten a reaction out of me.
"And who are you to decided what is and what is not my name? That is what I want to be called so do it or don't speak to me at all," He cocked his head.
"Well who are you to decide what I can and cannot say? You may have your wishes but I'm not a genie. I don't have to grant them," I narrowed my eyes further in frustration before taking a slow breath. This guy really irked me.
“Did you have an original purpose in coming over here other than ruining the one little moment of peace I have in this school?” He laughed at my sarcasm and I glared harder at him.
“Why my dear Zatanna-”
“Anna.” He didn’t even react before continuing.
“I just want to be your friend. I’ve seen you around the past year and studied you from afar. I’ve liked what I’ve seen and want to learn a little more about the person who supposedly hates everything,” I simply stared at him. After a moment my brain registered what he’d said and the urge to laugh washed over me in one big tidal wave forcing me to call on every ounce of inner strength to resist and stay afloat.
“Isn’t that kind of like stalking someone or at the very least creeping?” He shrugged.
“I’d use the term observing but to each their own I guess.”
“Besides that aren’t you being a little presumptuous to think that just because you want to be friends with me I’d want to be friends with you?”
“I’d call it friendly but again to each their own,” He finished with a slight smile. I stared at him again. Who was this guy?
“Oh what the hell. If it makes you go away and I can get back to my nap then sure, be my guest-”
“Be our guest! Be our guest!Put our service to the test. Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie, and we'll provide the rest...” He trailed off when he saw my facial expression which I’m sure was a mixture of horror and amusement.
“What?” He asked clearing his throat as he blushed slightly in embarrassment. Cute.
“Beauty and the Beast?” I asked snorting a little from laughter, having gotten over my initial shock and fear at his musical outbreak and now embracing the humor to it.
“It’s a great film!” He responded a little too quickly and a little too defensively. I nodded once one eyebrow raised.
“Alright Mr. Disney but if we’re going to be friends my one condition is the musical outbreaks can and will not be tolerated,” He nodded once fiddling with his hands. “Good,” I said before snuggling into my chair for a twenty minute snooze but he cleared his throat calling back my attention.
“I have one condition of my own.”
“Shoot,” I responded snuggling deeper into the seat as I locked my eyes onto his.
"Don't fall in love with me." His voice was calm, steady and completely void of any joking manner. His eyes bored into mine like a challenge making me swallow dryly and shift uncomfortably under his stare. After a moment I found my voice again and spoke in what was only a slightly shaken voice.
"Okay Shane West this isn't A Walk to Remember. I'm not some bullying jock who's turning over a new leaf for Little Miss House on the Prairie and you’re not a strong lunged leukemia victim who's fallen for a Grease wannabe. So can we stop acting?" My words were light but my body was tense and taught from unexplained nervousness. I hadn't known this kid for more than ten minutes and I already knew I didn't like him serious. He kept staring at me for a few moments longer before he broke back into a smile and his eyes grew light again.
“You’re cute when you babble,” he said with a laugh before reaching over and tapping my nose lightly. I went cross eyed following his finger and looked back up at him in shock at the physical contact. He chuckled again at my reaction before standing up and tucking his hands into his pockets. “Catch you around Zatanna.”
“It’s Anna,” I responded automatically but he was already gone.
